Contracts
Nuclear Fuel Cycle
During theWorld Nuclear Exhibition
(WNE) which took place from June
28-30, 2016 at Le Bourget, France,
AREVA
signed several contracts with its
international nuclear customers.
The Belgian Nuclear Research
Centre (SCK•CEN) and AREVA signed
an agreement to extend the contract for
the used fuel management from the BR2
research reactor, located in Mol, Belgium,
through 2030. BR2 is a worldwide player
in the production of medical radioisotopes
and for the safety evaluation of structural
materials and fuels for power reactors.
The Romanian agency for nuclear
energy and radioactive waste (ANDR)
and AREVA signed a contract to
carry out a prefeasibility study for the
construction of a fiber concrete container
manufacturing installation at the Saligny
site in Romania. The containers will allow
to safely condition low and intermediate
level waste at the repository, currently
under implementation at the same
location. Such fiber concrete containers
are already used by nuclear waste
management facility operators in France
and the U.S., among other countries.
AREVA TN, AREVA’s nuclear
logistics division, signed a contract with
Dominion Virginia Power to provide 75
NUHOMS
®
EOS dry shielded canisters to
two of the utility’s facilities through 2038.

Energy Contracts
Aecon Group Inc.
announced that
an Aecon joint venture (JV) has been
awarded two nuclear energy contracts by
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) valued
at $223 million for Aecon’s share.
Under the first contract, a JV between
Aecon (60%) and SNC-Lavalin Nuclear
Inc. (40%) has been awarded a $265
million turbine generator refurbishment
contract by OPG to carry out work on
all four steam turbine generators at the
Darlington Nuclear Generating Station
in Ontario. The scope of work includes a
complete overhaul of the 935 megawatt
steam turbines, generators, moisture
separator reheaters, condenser repairs,
and the implementation of new control
systems. Work has commenced and is
expected to be complete in 2025.
Additionally, the same JV was
awarded a $127 million engineering,
procurement and construction contract
for the Retube Waste Processing Building
at the Darlington Nuclear Generating
Station. Under this contract, work is split
50% to Aecon and 50% to SNC-Lavalin
Nuclear Inc. Work is expected to be
complete in 2017.

Full Scope Simulator
L-3MAPPS
announced that it signed
a contract with Slovenia’s Nuklearna
elektrarna Krško (NEK) to upgrade
the full scope simulator for the Krško
Nuclear Power Plant. The simulator
upgrade is part of NEK’s Safety Upgrade
Program (SUP) to modernize the plant to
prevent severe accidents and to mitigate
consequences consistent with the nuclear
industry’s response after the Fukushima
accident. The simulator upgrade project
will start immediately and is expected to
be in service in the third quarter of 2017.
The current UNIX operating system-
based simulator will be replaced with
a virtualized Windows-based platform
running L-3’s state-of-the-art Orchid
®
simulation environment. The virtual
machine solution is designed to simplify
simulator maintenance and switchover
between themain and backup simulations.
The nuclear island and conventional
island models will be migrated into Orchid.
In addition to various plant model upgrades
to reflect plant changes from the SUP,
the Electric Power Research Institute’s
Modular Accident Analysis Program
(MAAP4) will be upgraded to MAAP5
(A valid license to MAAP5 from EPRI
is required prior to a customer being able
to use MAAP5 with Licensee’s simulator
products. EPRI does not endorse any third-
party products or services), including the
addition of the spent fuel pit model. MAAP
is connected to the plant simulation to
model postulated severe accidents.
The simulator’s legacy Datapath SC
input/output (I/O) system will be replaced
with a new compact I/O system driven by
L-3’s Orchid Input Output software. The
compact I/O solution will also be used to
drive a new simulated emergency control
room, which is replacing remote shutdown
panels spread throughout the plant.

Life Extension
SNC-Lavalin
announced that it has
been awarded a contract valued at over
$20 million to provide management
and technical guidance to Argentine
nuclear reactor operator Nucleoeléctrica
Argentina SA (NA-SA).
Under the contract, SNC-Lavalin
will send 30 subject matter experts and
reactor specialists to Argentina to guide
NA-SA through the life extension of
its CANDU reactor, which includes
replacing main reactor components and
balance of plant (BOP) equipment. The
reactor is located at Embalse, Córdoba.
This contract follows previous
work SNC-Lavalin has done for NA-
SA, including engineering, procuring
and testing 370 state-of-the-art tooling
systems to replace the 380 pressure tubes
that hold the nuclear fuel bundles.
