Engineering &
Consulting
Rolls-Royce
and China National
Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) have
further strengthened their strategic
collaboration in civil nuclear power with
contracts signed in China.
The two companies have agreed
specific engineering and consultancy
services to be provided by Rolls-Royce
to CNNC, including the provision of
training. The contract signing underlines
the progress made since the two
companies signed an initial agreement in
June 2014 to explore areas to work more
closely together.
The contracts cover technical training
packages, including the utilisation of
CNNC Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
experts to support Rolls-Royce in the
UK. Rolls-Royce has significant nuclear
expertise, including providing advice to
governments and operators, supply chain
management and manufacturing and
technical engineering support.

Uranium Downblending
BWX Technologies, Inc. announced
that its
Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc.
(NFS)
subsidiary was awarded a contract valued
at $241.5 million for the downblending
of 10.4 metric tons of surplus highly
enriched uranium (HEU).
NFS will work under the Department
of Energy’s National Nuclear Security
Administration’s
(NNSA)
prime
contractor in support of NNSA’s Office of
Material Management and Minimization,
whose nonproliferation mission includes
reducing HEU stockpiles around the
world. The NNSA’s HEU disposition
program seeks to reduce the proliferation
threat from surplus HEU by converting
it to low enriched uranium. In this form,
the material can be used as commercial
nuclear reactor fuel.

Reactor
Decommissioning
SNC-Lavalin
has been awarded a
multimilliondollar contract by theUniversity
of Alberta for the decommissioning of
its Safe Low-Power Kritical Experiment
(SLOWPOKE
®
) research reactor.
SNC-Lavalin will perform and
manage the decommissioning work,
including waste management. Along with
providing the required tooling, equipment
and training for this work, SNC-Lavalin
will also deliver project, training, and
support documentation. The work has
begun in early 2016, ending in late 2017.
Developed by the Atomic Energy
of Canada Ltd. (AECL) in the 1960s,
this SLOWPOKE reactor is one of four
in Canada, operating in universities to
support nuclear education and neutron
research. SNC-Lavalin’s Nuclear team
also decommissioned a SLOWPOKE
reactor at Dalhousie University in 2011.
