What isWANO’s plan, going forward;
to sustain the momentum displayed by the
industry after the post Fukushima efforts
are completed?
WANO has a strategic plan, called
Compass. This currently lays out the
strategic imperatives for the period from
2015 to 2019. Compass is formed of four
focus areas, which each outline the areas
of work to which WANO will direct its
attention and resources over the next five
years.
The focus areas are:
1. Continue to support and set the
standards of high performance of the
world’s existing nuclear fleet.
2. Build and maintain a highly-trained,
professional
workforce
within
WANO.
3. Forge a stronger WANO through
more consistent, credible products
and
programmes,
including
providing nuclear leadership training
for our members.
4. Instil superior standards among new
industry entrants and maintain them
for end-of-life, life extensions and
decommissioning.
Staying power
More than 60 years of commercial nuclear power experience
The nuclear power industry demands a highly
specialized, diverse skillset and knowledge base.
As the engineer and/or constructor of more than
39,000 megawatts, we provide support for new nuclear
technologies, the emerging small modular reactor
market, operating plant technical services including
major component replacements, and facilities
that support the nuclear
fuel cycle.

What is WANO’s current involvement
in Fukushima Daiichi’s remediation,
decontamination and decommissioning
efforts?
WANO has no direct role with
TEPCO at the Fukushima site. However,
TEPCO is a member of the Tokyo Centre,
and therefore benefits from access to all
of WANO’s support services, such as
reviews, technical support missions,
training and sharing of industry operating
experience.
