Acquisition
Atkins
, the design, engineering and
project management consultancy, has
completed its acquisition of the Projects,
Products and Technology (PP&T)
segment of EnergySolutions after
receiving the necessary North American
regulatory approvals.
The acquisition strengthens Atkins’
nuclear multidisciplinary capability to a
2,000-strong global team with bases in
the UK, North America and China. This
team can also draw on the experience
of over 16,000 specialists from other
sectors in Atkins. PP&T is an innovative
650-person nuclear business that delivers
a wide range of technical engineering and
programme management services for the
decontamination and decommissioning
of high hazard government nuclear
facilities.

Feedwater Debris
Strainer
The first
GE Hitachi Nuclear
Energy
(GEH) Feedwater Debris Strainer
is now operating at the Forsmark Nuclear
Power Plant in Forsmark, Sweden. The
strainer was recently installed with only
minor piping changes and has performed
as designed since the plant returned to
service following a refueling outage.
The GEH Feedwater Debris Strainer
is designed to capture and retain debris
related to maintenance activities in
order to provide additional protection
against debris-related fuel failures in both
boiling and pressurized water reactors.
GEH delivered three strainer elements
and housings to Forsmark and provided
engineering, testing, installation support
and training.
Once installed, the additional
strainers will provide full coverage
of the plant’s feedwater flow stream.
GEH will work in collaboration with
the plant operator to evaluate the long-
term performance of the strainer and its
contributions in preventing future debris-
related failures.

Water Jet Peening
Mitsubishi
Nuclear
Energy
Systems, Inc.
(MNES) has successfully
completed equipment integration testing
in Kobe, Japan as part of an upcoming
Water Jet Peening (WJP) project this fall.
The Water Jet Peening process is a low-
risk Alloy 600 stress corrosion cracking
mitigation technology with 15 years of
proven field experience and 45 unique
applications performed by Mitsubishi
Heavy Industries (MHI). This proven
solution is 100% effective with no leaks
or indications in any of the previously
peened surfaces at 21 different Japanese
pressurized water reactors (PWRs).
The MNES Nuclear Services team,
supported by MHI technical personnel
and a trained teamof nuclear field services
personnel fromAZZ|WSI, Inc., conducted
the test in a full scale, 68-foot depth pool
simulating the reactor cavity. The testing
included both the robotic non-destructive
examination (NDE) process and the
complete cycling and demonstration
of the Water Jet Peening process and
equipment. Reactor vessel nozzle and
bottom-mounted instrumentation nozzle
mockups were peened repetitively
demonstrating the robust and reliable
nature of the equipment.
MNES is scheduled to conduct
Water Jet Peening for the first time in
the U.S. in fall of 2016 at the Wolf Creek
Generating Station. MNES has a second
contract for Water Jet Peening work in the
fall of 2017. The work is led by MNES
with assistance from MHI personnel
and teaming partners AZZ|WSI, Inc.,

License Application
Waste Control Specialists LLC
(WCS) submitted an application to the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
for a license to construct and operate a
Consolidated Interim Storage Facility
(CISF) for used nuclear fuel. The filing
comes after a year of pre-application
meetings with NRC and maintains the
timeline WCS outlined in February 2015.
The application is being led by
WCS, along with its partners AREVA and
NAC International, both global industry
leaders in the transportation and storage
of used nuclear fuel.
