near-term economic potential. At the
same time, Ameren Missouri opted to
not renew its partnership agreement
with Westinghouse but retains nuclear
generation alternatives in its integrated
resource plan.
The 11 utility members of the
NexStart SMR Alliance, four of which
currently hold nuclear generating
capacity, have expressed interest in the
Westinghouse SMR. As well, other
international utilities in North America,
Asia, and Europe have expressed interest
in the Westinghouse SMR.
12. Provide a brief description of
the Westinghouse SMR by providing
additional information which is not
covered above.
The Westinghouse SMR is a
compact, highly simplified, passively
safe, standardized, modular 225 MWe
(800 MWt) integral PWR that uses
soluble boron in the reactor coolant for
normal reactivity depletion, and control
rods for load follow and plant shutdown.
The reactor coolant systemconsists of
a heat-transfer circuit incorporated within
a single vessel, including the reactor core,
steam generator and eight reactor coolant
pumps. The system includes an integral
pressurizer, which is located above the
steam generator within the vessel, and
instrumentation for operational control
and safeguards actuation. The reactor
coolant system is serviced by a number of
auxiliary systems, including the chemical
and volume control system, normal
residual heat removal system, spent
fuel pit cooling system, steam generator
system, primary sampling system, liquid
and gaseous radioactive waste systems,
and the component cooling water system.
Safety injection, passive boration and
heat removal are provided by the passive
core cooling system and the ultimate heat
sink system.
All large diameter primary coolant
piping is eliminated. Primary piping is
limited to small diameters connecting
the reactor vessel with the passive core
cooling, chemical and volume control,
and primary sampling systems. The
containment; which is 1/25th the size
of the industry's leading AP1000
®
, is a
compact, high pressure, freestanding,
steel cylinder. The containment is an
ASME Division I, Section III, Subsection
NE MC Vessel with a design internal
pressure rating of 250 psig; this compares
to a typical large PWR containment
pressure rating of 50 to 60 psig. There is
an equipment hatch in the top head of the
containment. Both the containment and
the structure forming the pool surrounding
the containment are structurally designed
to meet seismic Category I requirements.

the vessels and internals of both reactors,
the eddy current inspection and sludge
lancing of the steam generators, the
ultrasonic inspection of the main primary
circuit piping and components, the
diagnosis of motor-operated valves, the
maintenance and testing of snubbers, the
integrated leak testing of the containment of
group 2 and the visual inspection of the main
pumps, pressurizer and steam generators of
group 2, among other operations.
The achievement of this contract
rounds off a year, 2013, in which the
foundations were laid for a strategy of
long-term consolidation of the presence
of the Tecnatom Group in Brazil.
During 2013 the Tecnatom Group has
also achieved several contracts in that
country, particularly significant being
the design, manufacturing and supply
of a passive scanner for the nuclear fuel
manufacturing facility of INB (Industrias
Nucleares do Brasil), the periodic safety
review at Angra 1 and the development
and application of training programmes
for the operators and other professionals
of Angra NPP groups 1 and 2.
These four new contracts are added
to and will go on from the fifteen service
contracts carried out throughout 2013,
which supply of a full-scope simulator
and the control room design review
for Angra 1, the training of operating
personnel, the verification and validation
of plant modifications, revision of the
operating procedures or the inspection
of thimbles, control rods, turbine rotors
and primary circuit piping, as well as
the inspection and repair of the heat
exchanger at Angra 2.
