Corporation
PWR Fuel
AREVA Inc.
has completed the
first delivery to an American utility of
GAIA lead test assemblies (LTAs), its
next-generation pressurized water reactor
(PWR) fuel design.
“This delivery is an important step
in the deployment in the U.S. market
of GAIA, an innovative solution that
provides an answer to some of the
operational and economic challenges
faced by our customers,” said Ron Land,
senior vice president of AREVA Inc.’s
Fuel Business Line. “This is a major
success for AREVA’s research and
development teams.”
AREVA’s GAIA fuel is the result of a
global research and development project
to meet the ever-increasing demands of
utilities in terms of safety, reliability and
robustness. Advancements include better
thermal performance, intrinsic tolerance
to earthquakes and enhanced mechanical
behavior.

Dry Shielded Canister
AREVA TN
, a division of AREVA,
recently expanded its portfolio of used
nuclear fuel storage and transport
solutions with the new NUHOMS
®
32PTH2 dry shielded canister (DSC) and
the MP197HB transport cask.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission (NRC) final rule regarding
approved spent fuel storage casks
(Amendment 3 to the Certificate of
Compliance 1029) went into effect
on Feb. 23, 2015, paving the way for
AREVA TN’s NUHOMS
®
32PTH2
system introduction to the U.S. market.
This system features a newly developed
transportable canister designed to safely
accommodate up to 32 intact – or 16
damaged – pressurized water used fuel
assemblies, including high burnup fuel
assemblies. Once loaded with used
fuel, this canister can be stored in the
company’s Standardized NUHOMS
®
Advanced Horizontal Storage Module,
which features the industry’s highest
level of seismic resistance.
AREVA TN also recently introduced
the MP197HB transport cask to the U.S.
market. This is the first and only transport
cask that is licensed in the country to
transport high burnup used fuel for offsite
storage.

Outage Services
Michigan-based DTE Energy has
awarded outage services work to
GE
Power & Water
through GE Hitachi
Nuclear Energy (GEH) and GE Power
Generation Services (PGS) for the
utility’s Fermi 2 Nuclear Power Plant.
GEH will provide a host of outage
and inspection services related to the
boiling water nuclear reactor at the Fermi
2 plant in Newport, Michigan, while PGS
will provide inspection and maintenance
services to the main generator and six
turbine valves. The services will be
provided during an outage in fall 2015.
In addition to providing critical
maintenance services to its existing unit,
GEH also has partnered with DTE Energy
in the new plant’s space. In April 2015,
the utility received approval from the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
for a license to construct and operate a
GEH Economic Simplified Boiling Water
Reactor (ESBWR) on the Fermi 2 plant
site. Issuance of the license concluded
a six-year process that examined the
technical, safety and environmental
aspects of the potential 1,500-MW
unit. The license marked the first for an
ESBWR and came on the heels of the
reactor’s NRC certification in 2014.
