Sensor Package
CMR GROUP
, the engine control
technology and instrumentation specialist,
has combined its high performance
temperature sensors and electronic
monitoring unit series into an integrated
solutions package for applications in the
nuclear power industry.
The move will meet the requirement
for instrumentation in the nuclear
sector where technology can add value
throughout the engineering supply chain
and ensure compliance with domestic
nuclear safety authorities, who provide
regulation and technical approval.
Incorporating four different sensor
series, CMR’s newly combined offering
features the K3 or K3ad performance
temperature
sensors,
which
are
environmentally compliant for the
ambient temperature monitoring of fluid,
gas and bearing temperatures in the
nuclear industry.
The AN sensor series is designed
for the temperature measurement of high
pressure fluids and aggressive gaseous
fluids used in nuclear power generation,
although they can also be used effectively
with non-pressurised fluids. The
AMB sensor series is recommended
for the conventional measurement of
ambient temperatures to very low or
sub-zero levels in damp or refrigerated
atmospheres, and ventilation ducts.

Ultrasonic Testing
Technique
During a recent U.S. outage, AREVA
NP demonstrated new ultrasonic testing
techniques that successfully included
off-axis inspection for cracks in a boiling
water reactor’s core shroud welds. The
new approach pairs a phased array
technique and a specialized multi-axis
manipulator.
The nuclear energy industry regularly
uses ultrasonic tools to inspect for cracks
parallel to the core shroud weld. However,
some core shroud exams indicated
perpendicular or “off-axis” cracking. As
a result, AREVA NP developed the new
consolidated tool to generate ultrasonic
testing at multiple orientations, helping
to accurately detect and characterize all
flaws surrounding the weld.
AREVA
NP’s
new
delivery
manipulator for the enhanced ultrasonic
technique features a rotational and
extending feature, which enables
horizontal and vertical weld examinations
without removing the tooling from the
reactor for orientation.
In alignment with the industry's best
practices, this new technique incorporates
the latest interim guidance on off-axis
flaw detection and sizing from the Electric
Power Research Institute’s Boiling Water
Reactor Vessel and Internals Project.

Valve Solutions
ValvTechnologies, Inc.
has been
delivering the US “Nuclear Promise”
since 2008. ValvTechnologies has partici-
pated in a megawatt recovery effort with
a Westinghouse PWR in Europe, that to
date has seen the recovery of eight of 13
lost Mw’s through leaking valves in their
main steam system.
By addressing application obsoles-
cence, changing linear technology with
quarter turn metal seated ball valves, the
plant has also realized improved person-
nel safety, eliminated downstream pip-
ing degradation and improved equipment
reliability. In addition, the plant has re-
duced maintenance, spare parts and ser-
vice needs by addressing vent, drain, iso-
lation, applications for three inches and
under in high energy nuclear applications
with ValvTechnologies’ solutions.
