• OPG remains within the $12.8 billion
project estimate;
• All necessary materials have been
delivered;
• Worker training at the state-of-the-
art reactor mock-up continues;
• The detailed execution plan has been
finalized.
To ensure a reliable supply of low-
carbon power during the refurbishments
at both Darlington and Bruce Nuclear,
OPG will seek regulatory approvals to
continue operating Pickering Nuclear
Generating Station until 2024. Extensive
technical work indicates Pickering can
operate safely during this time and that
doing so would avoid eight million tonnes
of greenhouse gas emissions.

Industry
NEI President & CEO
Maria Korsnick was elected
president and chief executive officer of
the
Nuclear Energy Institute
, the policy
organization for the U.S. nuclear energy
industry, effective Jan. 1, 2017.
Korsnick has served as NEI’s
chief operating officer since May 2015
as a loaned executive from Exelon
Generation and Constellation Energy
Nuclear Group (CENG). In that role,
she has guided NEI’s day-to-day
operations and represented the industry
before a multitude of stakeholders—
including the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission, the Obama administration,
Congress, state lawmakers, international
nuclear professionals, think tanks and
policymakers.
She will succeed Marvin Fertel, who
retires on Dec. 31 after nine years as
NEI’s president and CEO.
Prior to joining NEI, Korsnick was
Exelon Generation’s senior vice president
for Northeast operations and chief
nuclear officer for CENG. She oversaw
operations at three nuclear energy
facilities and chaired the industry’s
Fukushima Response Steering Committee
that identified safety enhancements for
extreme events based on lessons learned
from the 2011 accident in Japan and
implemented them at all U.S. reactors.

Trade Mission
Representatives of Canada’s nuclear
industry talked business in Paris, France
with global nuclear organizations at the
World Nuclear Exhibition (WNE).
Organized by the
Organization of
Canadian Nuclear Industries
(OCI), the
trade mission of 11 Canadian companies
engaged in three days of targeted one-on-
one meetings, technical presentations,
events and tours. Activities were largely
focused around the WNE 2016.
The diverse WNE community
provided Canadian Delegates the
opportunity to discuss future nuclear
needs on a global scale.
“We all recognize that Climate
Change is a clear and present danger
and that the nuclear industry must
play an important role in coordinated
international efforts to reduce overall
Green House Gases (GHG) emissions to
target levels,” commented OCI President
Ron Oberth.
Canadian delegates at the WNE
played key roles in several areas.
Francesca Ottoni of SNC-Lavalin spoke
about CANDU reactor flexible fuel
cycle capability in a panel discussion on
the role of nuclear energy in combating
climate change. Paul Murphy of Gowling
WLG participated in a panel discussion
on innovations in nuclear development
financing, while OCI President Ron
Oberth spoke about the Canadian market
potential for SMRs in another panel. In
addition, Dr. Oberth was honored to be
one of six jurors that selected the winning
company for the WNE Operational
Excellence Award.

X Energy, LLC
(X-energy) and a
subsidiary of Southern Nuclear Operating
Company(SouthernNuclear)haveentered
into a memorandum of understanding
as a step toward commercializing and
deploying X-energy’s High Temperature
Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR): the Xe-100.
The Xe-100 reactor series will produce
zero-emission energy around the clock
to ensure reliable electricity that can be
adapted to a variety of markets. This
collaboration aims to make available an
additional nuclear solution that supports
the global clean energy movement.
In early 2016, the U.S. Department
of Energy (DOE) separately issued
X-energy and the Southern Company-
TerraPower partnership each with
five-year Advanced Reactor Concept
Cooperative Agreement awards. The
X-energy award focuses on: furtherance
of reactor design; fuel development; and
initial licensing activities.

Engineering Lab Facility
Atkins
celebrates a commitment of
investment to the Tri-Cities engineering
and research science community. Atkins’
Energy CEO, Martin Grant, hosted an
open house on September 22, 2016, at
the Atkins Engineering Laboratory, in
Richland, Washington.
The Atkins Engineering Lab facility
will provide a future operating laboratory
environment for Washington State
University Tri-Cities (WSU –TC) students
and faculty to gain hands-on science,
technology, engineering and mathematical
experience. The 13,000 square-foot
building currently houses a Large-Scale
Integrated Test (LSIT) platform which is
vital to the success of the Waste Treatment
Plant (WTP). Testing will allow designers
to verify and revise designs of critical
mixing equipment prior to installation in
the plant. The lab meets a growing demand
for large scale testing to support Hanford
and other US Department of Energy site
contractors.
The open house event provided an
opportunity for Atkins to showcase its
local and global offerings to the nuclear
industry. Atkins works on projects that
cover the complete nuclear fuel cycle
including fuel fabrication, new build,
existing generation, decontamination,
waste management and waste processing;
all supported by a differentiated
technology portfolio and integrated
