company was given the award for its
maintenance and modification work on
the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant.
This award is presented annually by
the TVA to contract partners that achieve
outstanding safety performance, and is
named for Maynard “Hedgehog” Spence,
an employee of Marsh & McLennan
Companies who served as a Loss Control
Consultant to TVA’s owner-controlled
insurance program. He dedicated his
career to jobsite safety on construction
projects. Maynard died tragically in the
World Trade Center attacks on September
11, 2001 and the award was created to
honor his memory.

PRISM Reactor
GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy
(GEH)
has welcomed the announcement by the
Nuclear Decommissioning Authority
(NDA) that its PRISM reactor technology
is a “credible option” for managing the
UK’s plutonium stockpile.
After an investigation into the
potential of the various alternative
options for plutonium reuse, the NDA has
affirmed GEH’s view that PRISM could
reuse plutonium faster than competing
technologies; providing significant value
for money to the UK taxpayer.
NDA’s announcement follows a two-
year review process which now gives the
green light for PRISM – a high energy,
sodium-cooled reactor that uses proven,
safe, and advanced technologies – to be
considered as a credible option to manage
the Sellafield plutonium stockpile.
The Government previously stated
a preferred option to build a new MOX
plant at Sellafield but, in an effort to
gather data on technologies that offer
better value or less risk to the taxpayer,
responded to GEH’s interest in providing
a credible alternative option for the
management of plutonium, the PRISM
advanced reactor.

Class IE Cables
General Cable
announced that its
ULTROL
®
60+
Low-Voltage Safety-
Related Class 1E, 60-year-life Cable
has successfully completed third-party
environmental qualification testing with
one-year post-DBE submergence. With
adherence toASME NQA-1 and US NRC
10CFR50 Appendix B requirements,
the completion of this extensive testing
confirms conformance of
ULTROL 60+
to advanced, passive GEN III+ and legacy
40-year reactor profiles.
Kinectrics, General Cable’s choice
for testing and product qualification, has
completed thermal and radiation aging
and Design Basis Events (DBE) proving
a 60+-year service life, including cable
resistance to one-year submergence test
in hot boric acid solution. This third-party
testing demonstrates that General Cable’s
ULTROL 60+
cables meet prior industry
standards, as well as GEN III+ reactor
profile requirements, and provides an
independent check and balance to ensure
data-integrity.
With the verification of meeting
the most rigorous GEN III+ reactor
requirements for a 60-year operating life
and beyond,
ULTROL 60+
low-voltage
cable is now fully ready to support
the modernization and construction of
pressurized and boiling water nuclear
power plants worldwide.

Technical Advisory
Group
Konecranes,
Inc
.,
a
global
manufacturer of lifting technology, has
recently become a member of the U.S.
Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO
project committee (PC) 283.
Accredited by the
American National
Standards Institute
(ANSI) and led by the
American Society of Safety Engineers
(ASSE), the TAG was formed in order
to develop an international occupational
health and safety (OH&S) standard to
keep workers around the world safe.
As part of their enduring commitment
to worker safety,
Konecranes
will
join the TAG representing the United
States, advising on the development of
a global ISO Occupational Health and
Safety Management Systems (OHSMS)
standard. This standard aims to provide
usable guidance for industries and
governmental agencies around the world
for improving worker safety.
The TAG will advise ANSI on
voting positions relevant to the proposed
OHSMS standard and will meet to
discuss issues related to the standard’s
development. As the U.S. member body
to ISO, ANSI accredits TAGs such as
this one to develop and transmit U.S.
positions on ISO technical activities. The
TAG is headed by ASSE, which serves
as administrator for the group to ISO PC
283.

Steam Generator Testing
NuScale Power, LLC
recently
successfully completed its helical
coil steam generator (HCSG) testing
activities at the SIET S.p.A. (SIET)
facilities in Piacenza, Italy, and that
during that same time period, the U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
conducted a successful quality assurance
(QA) inspection of the testing activities.
The result of the inspection was a rare
outcome in that the NRC concluded with
no findings, observations, violations,
recommendations or non-conformances
identified.
The NRC inspection team concluded
that NuScale’s and SIET’s QA policies
and procedures complied with the
applicable requirements, and that SIET’s
personnel were implementing these
policies and procedures effectively in
support of NuScale’s HCSG testing
activities.
NuScale is currently developing and
testing computer code design analysis
software to support the NRC design
certification of their advanced light water
reactor design. The NuScale design
includes a first-of-a-kind HCSG for
conversion of nuclear heat into process
steam. NuScale contracted the services
of SIET for the full-scale testing of the
HCSG performance over the expected
