and we can check the visual envelopes
and make sure that all the relocation of
devices conforms with all the regulatory
and ergonomic requirements.

Do we have an owners group for the
control room redesign?
We do have a utility working
group, and it’s comprised of a number
of the nations’ nuclear operators. They
all participate in different ways. Our
research is available to everyone. It’s
available to utilities. It’s available to
vendors. It’s available to suppliers,
consultants, and other organizations.
It’s available especially to the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission and to other
stakeholders, NEI, and INPO. We want
to work with the broad nuclear power
industry community.

Concluding comments.
The Department of Energy, through
the Light Water Reactor Sustainability
Program, wants to play a key role in
supporting the long-term operation of our
nation’s light water reactor commercial
nuclear power assets. We understand
that these are our nation’s vital energy
resources. They comprise a key part of
our carbon-free electricity generation
capacity. And so, we’re doing a lot of
the R&D and other supporting activities
necessary to address the long-term aging
management operation and efficiency
improvement for those assets. We’re
very fortunate to be able to partner with
organizations like EPRI, INPO, NEI
and the owner-operators themselves.
We really look forward to the time
when these technologies start making
it through the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission and begin to work with
the NRC on pilot projects for digital
technology implementation. I think once
we’ve reached that stage and once digital
technology starts to be deployed on a
more frequent basis, I think we’ll start to
see efficiency gains and improvements
in our light water reactor fleet that are
necessary in order for it to remain a vital
and cost competitive asset that the nation
needs it to be. We’re very happy to be
involved in that, to the extent that we are
and the role that we play.
