Otek introduced an instrument that,
for the first time, replaced fit, form and
function in virtually all analog and digital
instruments. This new technology is the
second generation of digital technology.
Using high efficiency LED’s, ultra
lowpowerApplication-SpecificIntegrated
Circuits (ASICs) and ingenious software
and hardware, the New Technology Meter
(NTM) Series became available. The
NTM is driven by the signal it measures
just like Analogs (AC, DC, or current
loop) and also includes automatic signal
failure detection (even post-mortem),
isolated serial I/O, and an automatic
tri-color bargraph with digital display.
Keeping in mind the plants that had been
burned during the first cross over, the
series was designed to also accept over
30 different input signal conditioners,
making it a suitable replacement for
analog & digital instruments no longer
available. The NTM accepts 5-32VDC or
90-265VAC control power and includes
self diagnosis, Ethernet, 32GB memory
stick, mathematical functions, PID, X-Y
tables and polynomials. Imagine the
possibilities!
Combining the automatic tricolor
bargraph with digital numerical display,
the company accomplished several goals
such as mimicking the analog trend,
powerless operation, high accuracy &
reliability, operator interface (HMI)
(Human to Machine Interface), data
collection and transmission (MMI)
(Machine to Machine Interface),
automatic signal failure detection/
alarming and up to 99% power reduction
vs. previous digitals, to name a few.
Soon after the NUPIC/ANS show,
orders for NTM’s were being placed by
severalNPP.Testingandcommercialgrade
dedication including Software Validation
and Verification (SV&V) was performed
by AZZ/NLI to seismically qualify the
meters and confirm the quality and Class
1E compliance. Near the end of 2013 the
NTM series was announced as one of
Processing’s Magazine’s Breakthrough
Products of the Year. The now award
winning technology has everything the
I&C room needed. The NTM has isolated
serial I/O communication including
Ethernet (optional), isolated analog
output (4-20mA) for PID (proportional-
integral-derivative) or retransmission,
output relays or solid state relay drivers,
and universal power input. Additionally,
only 10% of power (compared to 1990’s
digital) is required.
The NTM Series sparked interest
from many plants about display meters.
Today the company is working on a new
line of display meters. The Universal
Panel Meters (UPM) uses the same award
winning and patent pending technology
of the NTM series. The New UPM series
incorporates an alpha-numeric tri-color
display rather than a bargraph display.
The units can be used as DPM display
meter, controller, counter, timer and
serial input remote display/controller for
PAC/SCADA as well as paperless chart
recorder. The UPM is expected to be
released in the fourth quarter of 2015.
Thanks to the addition of the NTM
series to the market and the upcoming
UPM series, the future of I&C rooms
is not only brightened from the light of
LED’s but from viable, practical and
affordable replacement of out-dated
technology.
The best news:
1. The NTM uses generic multivendor
components so the there is virtually
no obsolescence.
2. The NTM is all modular, easily and
economically customized for any
panel cutout.
3. There is no rewiring required with the
NTM. Easily customize the unit to
match existing wiring.
4. The NTM uses ~1% of the energy
of comparable digitals (or none in
signal power versions), so you do not
have to redesign emergency power.
In conclusion, the NTM is simply
“plug and play,” saving you millions of
dollars and years of planning and labor.
