Comisión Federal de Electricidad
(CFE) wants a technology that has
already been operating. Since that’s their
preference, we are likely going to bid
our Advanced Boiling Water Reactor
(ABWR), which has 25 years of operating
experience and is the safest Gen III design
in operation. The Commercial Operation
Date (COD) dates on those plants are in
the late 2020s.

What are GE Hitachi’s other
international business involvements?
In Europe, we’re working with our
partners Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy,
Ltd. (HGNE) in the UK for the Horizon
project. We continue to support HGNE
as they’re going through the Generic
Design Assessment (GDA) licensing
phase. They’re in the final step and that’s
progressing very well. We help provide
engineering services and licensing
assistance for them in that market.
Poland is another country that we’re
very interested in. They have had some
political changes, and so that has slowed
down that process, but we believe they’re
going to build new nuclear in Poland
someday, and we think we’ve got a great
solution for them. It’s just a matter of
timing and policy framework for new
nuclear build.
A market that we’re actually
becoming very interested in is China,
especially on advanced, or Gen IV,
reactor designs. The Gen IV market,
not only in China but globally, is one
that we expect to grow exponentially.
This market is likely to become much
larger long-term than light-water reactor
technology. Not only are Gen IV reactors
such as our PRISM reactor inherently
safe, you get much better fuel economics.
Plus our technology has the ability to
consume used fuel. It’s an ideal solution.
You think about all the used fuel we have
globally, this plant can use it as its fuel.
We submitted our PRISM technology
into the expression of interest in the UK
SMR program. PRISM is an SMR
and can be built in a modular fashion
in factories, and it has the added benefit
of consuming used fuel. In addition, the
UK has stockpiles of plutonium that this
technology can consume as fuel.
