( Continued from page 43) comparing design life to temperature is nearly identical to the coil’s predecessor. This effort supports continued efforts for license renewal and extended operations. UseofthemorereliableWestinghouse HT CEDM Gripper Coil can reduce the cost of an unplanned 6 day short notice outage which can cost the utility upwards of $11 million in replacement power, manpower, and radioactive waste costs. Productivity/Efficiency The Westinghouse HT CEDM Gripper Coil was designed to be an easy-to-install replacement into existing CEDM coil stack assemblies. The original CEDM coil replacement requires removal from a steel housing, cleaning of the housing, insertion of a new coil, and reassembly into the housing. The new HT CEDM coil comes fully potted inside of a new steel housing so that replacement consists only of removal of the original CEDM coil housing and installation of the new HT CEDM coil assembly. Westinghouse put significant effort to ensure the Westinghouse HT coil maintained the existing foot print of the older CE coil, so that no additional modification was required for installation. Transferability The Westinghouse HT CEDM Gripper Coil can be used at all CE CEDM equipped plants, benefiting the entire fleet. Palo Verde Unit 2 has replaced 100% of their Upper Gripper coils with plans to do the same in the remaining Units 1 and 3. In addition to Palo Verde, the Westinghouse HT coil has already been installed in multiple units across multiple sites. Communication, Vision, & Leadership The development of the Westinghouse HT CEDM Gripper Coil was requested by the PVGS Engineer. He sponsored a Westinghouse Pressurized Water Owners Group (PWROG) effort to jointly fund the effort with all the PWROG CE member utilities. When none of the other utilities elected to contribute, the PVGS Engineers convinced senior PVGS management to fund it directly. The PVGS Engineers worked closely with the Westinghouse team to ensure that the end product would meet and even exceed the PVGS needs for a reliable coil for the next 60 years.
