22 NuclearPlantJournal.com Nuclear Plant Journal, September-October 2018 3. Are diesel generators classified as non-safety-related in EPR? On EPR design, there are four emergency diesel generators designed with the highest safety level and there are two additional diversified diesel generators also safety classified. Finally, there are six safety classified diesel generators in EPR. 4. Is operation of EPR user friendly to the younger generation? EPR is operated from the Main Control room which is computerized. Extensive human factor analyses have been performed in order to offer a user- friendly environment, facilitating plant’s operation. Obviously, the younger generation demanding expectations, when it comes to digital environments have been taken into account. 5. What are the other ways, the operation staff are benefited from the new technology? EPR has increased automation level of the systems by benefiting from the latest technology of the safety Instrumentation &Control (I&C). Therefore, the operator’s workload is decreased in comparison with the existing plants. In addition, state of the art monitoring systems are installed throughout the plant. Available on-line information regarding the plant’s status facilitates the operation staff’s daily activities. 6. What Safety-related I&C enhance- ments been implemented in EPR? The overall I&C architecture of the EPR meets the most stringent Generation III+ safety requirements: multiple redundant I&C systems are implemented, ensuring that even if one system fails, several systems will be available to mitigate any accident. Besides, the EPR design features, unique INCORE instrumentation system is based on Cobalt detectors which allows monitoring nuclear reaction directly from the core. 7. Highlight some of the major innovations which have been undertaken in EPR. The major innovations of EPR design include Core-melt mitigation (Core catcher and Containment design), 4 independent emergency divisions Emergency diesel building - The 6 diesel generators at the plant were started up for operation testing.
