Nuclear Plant Journal, September-October 2018 NuclearPlantJournal.com 19 represents an important part of our efforts and commitment to continuously learn from and build on proven practices and international operating experience. 6. Which international organizations or companies are working with you to support the success of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant? Themagnitude of the Barakah project is such that it is fair to say that it is a truly international project where companies from around the world provide their expertise and services to support ENEC and Nawah to achieve their objectives. As a result of this, we have received incredible support as we work toward the operation of the first reactor in the Arab World. For instance, ENEC’s Joint Venture partner and Nawah’s co-owner, the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), will continue to play an active role in supporting the long-term sustainable operation of the Barakah Plant for its entire lifetime. We are currently working with nuclear operating experts from KEPCO to ensure we have their unique insights and experience gained during the start-up of our Korean reference plant, Shin Kori 3, to meet the UAE regulator’s requirements to obtain approval of the Operating License. Further, in 2016, ENEC signed the Operating Support Services Agreement with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP).Under this agreement,KHNPwill send experienced and qualified operations and maintenance personnel, including main control room and local operators, to the plant to support the Nawah team. An estimated 400 KHNP experts will support operations at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant every year through 2030 and some of them are already working alongside their colleagues from Nawah. Apart from our Korean partners, we also have well-established relationships with nuclear companies from around the world and some components of the plant come from countries such as Germany and Japan. We are also a member of WANO’s Atlanta Office, which has been extremely beneficial for us in terms of sharing operational experience of the pre-operational and start-up phases of a nuclear plant. In addition, we regularly host technical support missions in many areas, such as WANO review visits and IAEA inspections. Our collective aim as a member of the nuclear global community is to support reliable and safe operation of all reactors around the globe, and we are already sharing our experiences in order to ensure that the UAE plays a role in continuing this quest for continuous improvement. As we continue on our path toward operating the first nuclear reactor in the Arab World, I am sure that we will extend our cooperation with other nuclear operating companies internationally. We have a lot to learn from experienced operators and we also have a lot to contribute to the global industry. I am proud to lead Nawah through this important phase and share my experience with the talented UAE Nationals who are working to deliver clean, safe and reliable electricity to the UAE grid.
