12 NuclearPlantJournal.com Nuclear Plant Journal, September-October 2018 Due to the age of pumps in the industry today, many become obsolete and unsupported by their manufacturers, while still actively in service. This poses safety issues. Through engineering and integrated manufacturing, Hydro can now meet your needs quickly, without any changes to your system. Quality assurance backed by ASME III and Z299 certifications. Contact: Faisal Salman, Hydro, telephone: (312) 399-9913, email: fsalman@hydroinc.com . Bellefonte Agreement Sargent & Lundy has reached an agreement with SNC-Lavalin to support the completion of Bellefonte Unit 1 Nuclear Generating Station in Hollywood, Alabama. Work is expected to start as soon as Nuclear Development LLC closes its acquisition of the Alabama facility later this year. SNC-Lavalin, which has signed a Letter of Agreement with Nuclear Development LLC to provide engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) services to complete Bellefonte Unit 1, will engage Sargent & Lundy as needed for this multi-year project based on its in-depth nuclear power expertise and proven record in delivering successful projects. The possible services to be provided by Sargent & Lundy for this project include completion of engineering and design for various plant systems, structures, and programs. The engineering and design work would involve preparation of design changes to replace missing, obsolete and degraded equipment and to ensure systems, structures and components meet all regulatory requirements. Sargent & Lundy may also provide procurement and licensing support as well as field engineering support during construction and startup. Fuel Fabrication X-energy held their first public meeting with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff on August 24, 2018, to discuss their proposed TRISO-X fuel fabrication facility. The purpose of the meeting was to familiarize the NRC staff and the public with the TRISO-X fuel fabrication process and discuss plans to prepare a fuel fabrication facility license application for NRC review and approval. X-energy submitted a Regulatory Engagement Plan to the NRC’s Nuclear Materials and Safety Safeguards Office on August 8, 2018, defining the pre- application engagement topics relevant to TRISO-X. This public meeting is the first in a series of meetings planned with the NRC. Dr. Pete Pappano, X-energy’s Vice President of Fuel Production, stated: “Advanced nuclear reactors are the future of nuclear power. The availability of high assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel and a U.S.-based production line are critical elements for advanced reactor deployment. Our TRISO-X facility will produce fuel for these advanced reactors and potentially accident tolerant fuel (ATF) for the fleet of existing light water reactors (LWRs).” Contact: Melanie White Lyons, X-energy, telephone: (301) 363-2839, email: mlyons@x-energy.com. The cartridge-style pump models are simple to maintain and allows customized pump casings for direct fit replacement of older pumps. steam generators. CNNC noted that all four components had been installed within just 19 days, providing “a useful reference for the construction of other similar power stations”. The vessel and steam generators were all installed using CNNC’s new method using an E-frame to “flip” the components. It said this method can improve efficiency and safety, as well as reducing labour intensity and reducing the chance of human error, compared with the traditional “fixed bracket” installation. The technique further improves the safety and economy of the “pre-introduction” construction method - where the main reactor equipment is installed before the dome of the containment building - which CNNC first used in a reactor of this type at Karachi 2. In late-June, 2018, Sanmen 1 became the world’s first AP1000 to achieve grid connection and power generation. The unit will now undergo gradual power ascension testing until all testing is safely and successfully completed at 100% power. On completion of these tests, CNNC will then seek approval for commercial operation of the unit. In September 2007, Westinghouse and its partner the Shaw Group received authorisation to construct four AP1000 units in China: two at Sanmen and two more at Haiyang in Shandong province. Construction of Sanmen 1 began in April 2009, while first concrete for Sanmen 2 was poured in December 2009. Construction of Haiyang 1 and 2 began in September 2009 and June 2010, respectively.
