Nuclear Plant Journal, May-June 2018 NuclearPlantJournal.com 41 Risk-Informed Resolution of GSI-191 Award Type: NEI TIP Award. Company: STP Nuclear Operating Company, South Texas Project Electric Generating Station. Team: Rob Engen, Steve Blossom, Wayne Harrison, Ernie Kee, Mike Murray, Dave Rencurrel, Drew Richards, Wes Schulz. Last July, the NRC approved a license amendment adopting a risk- informed resolution to Generic Safety Issue-191 (GSI-191). For 20 years, GSI-191—the assessment of debris accumulation on pressurized water reactor sump performance—has been an industrywide safety issue. The NRC’s concerns centered around the impact of fibrous debris following a loss of cooling accident on the ability of the containment sumps to maintain long-term cooling. For the past six years, STP led the industry in developing a risk-informed and deterministic methodology to solve this challenge. Partnering with academia and others in the industry, the team developed an innovative, risk-informed solution that guards safety and benefits the industry. The approved NRC license amendment eliminates the need to replace fibrous insulation in STP’s units and avoids 176 REM of exposure. The cost savings is estimated at $43 million. Computer Modeling’s Ability to Gain Efficiencies Award Type: NEI TIP Award. Company: PSEG Nuclear, Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations. Team: John Peacock, Richard DeSanctis, Joel Edwards, Giselle Huckoby, David Mannai, Trina Washington. To arrest 16 years of increasing security demands and costs to ensure that the design and layout of every nuclear facility could withstand a deliberate attack from the design-basis threat, Salem-Hope Creek decided it was time to challenge the defensive strategy employed at the site objectively. By choosing to integrate computer modeling and simulation software into their Performance Evaluation Program, Salem-Hope Creek was able to compile the data from 9,000 attacks computer generated against the site. That data helped to confirm/assuage assumptions, supported strategic physical improvements and objectively analyzed defensive strategy with a significantly improved annual operating budget. The NAYGN Impact Award Type: NEI TIP Award. Company: North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN). Team: Christine Johnsen, Amanda Lang, Natalie Wood, Abbey Donahue, Steve Ward, Kristen McCoskey, Chris Wolfe, Lee Causey, Maria Pfeffer, Robery Ashworth, Monica Beistline, Alyse Scurlock, Adam Reichenbach, Andrew Kalchik. The NAYGN Impact is unlike anything the organization has done before. We challenged ourselves to look beyond our individual contributions, and we pushed ourselves to grow in ways that would advance the entire nuclear industry. In 2016, the continental leaders of NAYGN challenged our members, and their response was resounding. The momentum continued in 2017 where we increased social media engagement to reach over 1 million people, expanded public information outreach, organized a teacher’s workshop and released a children’s book titled Marie’s Electric Adventure. The collaboration between the continental NAYGN leadership and individual local chapters was instrumental. Now, in 2018 we are innovating our impact—supporting ideas proposed by our members, funding them and sharing them with all our chapters. This allows our members to work on projects they are passionate about while sharing best practices and enhancing innovation across individuals, companies and industry. !" #$ % &' () ***)' () +, - . /, - ,.- 012 ,/13014. !
