2018 TIP Award Winners AdvancedCEMRPExamination Award Type: Framatome, Inc. TIP Vendor Award. Company: Dominion Energy, Millstone 2 Power Station. Team: Michael Stark, Engineering (Dominion); Patrick Jacksin, Outage Coordinator (Dominion); Jason Jones, Manager, NDE Operations (Framatome); Zach Smith, Design Engineer, NDE Tool Development (Framatome); Bob Furter, Electrical Design Engineering Manager (Framatome). The Dominion/Framatome team developed a first-of-a-kind automated tooling system capable of performing high-resolution visual examinations in hard-to-access, highly irradiated regions on both the OD and ID of Millstone Power Station’s Combustion Engineering-style upper and lower reactor internals. This innovative tooling led to significant reductions in personnel dose and minimized critical path by performing remote exams faster and in parallel with other activities. The stable platform provided enhanced, encoded visual exams of critical components on the reactor internals to satisfy both the 10-year In-Service Inspection (ISI) and Materials Reliability Program (MRP) 227, “Pressurized Water Reactors Internals Inspection and Evaluation Guidelines requirements." ARMOR and IronClad Accident Tolerant Fuel Lead Assemblies Award Type: GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy TIP Vendor Award. Company: Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant. Team: Johnathan Chavers (SNC); Nicholas Satterlee (SNC); Randall Dunavant (SNC); Patty McCumbee (GNF); Yang Pi Lin (GNF); Russ Fawcett (GNF); Kurt Terrani (ORNL); Raul Rebak (GE Global Research); Evan Dolley (GE Global Research); Dave Morgan (GNF); Sarah Desilva (GNF); Marty Swan (GNF); Brian Eber (GNF); Rich Augi (GNF); Vickie Perry (GNF); Aaron Phillippe (SNC); Paul Cantonwine (GNF); Dan Lutz(GNF); Patrick Davis (GNF); Cary Kunz (GNF). Southern Nuclear (SNC) and Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF) led a multiorganizational team to significantly accelerate the deployment of Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) lead test assemblies into a commercial reactor—Southern’s Plant Hatch. Four years in advance of the DOE schedule, the SNC/GNF team delivered ferritic steel alloy ATF solutions derived from research performed by ORNL and GE Global Research Center and transformed them into segmented prototypical fuel rods for inclusion into GNF2 IronClad LTAs. Concurrently, the team deployed GNF’s ARMOR (Abrasion Resistant, More Oxidation Resistant) ATF solution in segmented GNF2 lead test fuel rods. ARMOR and IronClad are anticipated to provide enhanced fuel reliability, increased safety, operational flexibility and reduced cost by leveraging accident tolerant properties. Beyond transference of the cladding technologies, the rapid, high-quality deployment of ATF lead test assemblies demonstrates that accelerated innovation in fuel products is achievable. Efficient Long-Term Reactor Internals Management Award Type: Westinghouse TIP Vendor Award. Company: PSEG Nuclear, Salem Nuclear Generating Station. Team: Robert DeNight; Ed Eilola; George Holoman, PSEG; Sam Markos, PSEG; Tom McLaughlin, PSEG; Len Rajkowski. During the spring 2017 outage for Salem 2, PSEG Nuclear instituted a robust outage and contingency planning campaign for baffle-former bolt inspections and replacements. The unique approach saved time in the outage schedule, reduced dose exposure for personnel and set the stage for the long-term health of the unit’s reactor internals.
