What work has Rolls-Royce done in Chinese nuclear power plant upgrade and new plants? Rolls-Royce has been working for more than 30 years in China. We started to deliver safety I&C systems to the first Chinese nuclear power plants, such as Daya Bay, Qinshan and Lingao. From 2008, we have been highly involved in the new build programme in China (CPR1000 units, ACPR1000 and Hualong-1 reactors), both with CGN and CNNC. We have delivered Digital Neutron Instrumentation Systems using the Spinline ® technology, Digital Rod Control Systems using the Rodline ® technology and Bibloc ® Pressure transmitters to 32 new units. We have also been involved on the first I&C modernization projects in China. In 2012, CGN awarded a contract to Rolls- Royce to upgrade the original analog Neutron Instrumentation System (NIS), with the latest digital NIS of Rolls-Royce, underpinned by Spinline technology. This modernization project involved the replacement of six electronic cabinets per unit, including the conditioning and processing cabinets. Rolls-Royce scope for this project covers the design, manufacturing, supply and installation support. In 2018, we have been also awarded a contract to perform the Neutron Instrumentation system modernization for Daya Bay reactors. 4. What is Rolls-Royce’s strategy for upgrading US nuclear power plants with safety-related Instrumentation and Controls; especially, after its global experience? Thanks to our unique experience in this area, we have developed a complete range of solutions and services to support nuclear utilities for their Plant Life Extension (PLEX) / Subsequent License Renewal projects. These capabilities range from qualification and licensing support, extension of qualification, definition of I&C PLEX modernization strategy including requirements development and vetting, system design, I&C PLEX turnkey projects (modification, partial and global modernization) to I&C integration and supply chain management. From our customer’s point of view, our added value comes from: Our capability to have an in-depth I&C Engineering dialogue with both the End-User and one of the most stringent Safety Authority in the world, and demonstrate that the proposed solution fulfils the safety requirements. Our experience in moderniz- ing various vintage plant de- signs with our digital technology Our licensing organization experience and working with US industry groups as well as regulators is moving forward with digital modernization in the US. Our proven capabilities and readiness to manage complex projects, in close cooperation with local partners, and sub-suppliers as appropriate. Our capability to define a project set-up / organization, and planning strategy fitting with a constrained project schedule. Our Commitment on a long-term support of the delivered technology (20 years and beyond). Proven on time, including outage scope timing, and on budget successful digital modernization support. Long term component obsolescence management. In the US, our objective is to use our extensive modernization experience to support nuclear operators by helping Hardline TM , the latest non-programmed safety I&C technology developed by Rolls-Royce. Interconnected tests platform of the I&C modernization project in France (20 units of 1300MW). (Continued on page 28)
