24 NuclearPlantJournal.com Nuclear Plant Journal, January-February 2019 surveillances to minimize the risk of cycling the plant – in other words, changing the power output of the plant dramatically. There are a lot of benefits to not only understanding the data and how to better operate, but also trying not to put the plant at risk of tripping when you’re doing testing. It’s now a matter of determining the best platforms and helping utilities to go through that process. 4. What is Framatome’s I&C installed base in China? Framatome has a pretty significant footprint in China, not just from an I&C perspective. Invensys started in China back in the early 2000s. We’ve got a long history with the Qinshan plant with SPEC 200 and with the Foxboro DCS on the older units at Qinshan. The Foxboro company was the first joint venture outside of the U.S. to open in China in Shanghai. On the nuclear side, the company populated the Qinshan plant with a lot of SPEC 200 and with the Foxboro DCS and, as a result, we had an installed base with which to start. I personally became involved in the early 2000s when Qinshan was starting to expand and looking at digitizing. We evaluated digital options and started looking at Triconex and how to modernize the safety systems at Qinshan. While Qinshan ultimately made the decision to continue with an analog solution, this experience opened the door for the new units in the early to mid-2000s. In 2008 we secured eight units where we did all the digital systems, both safety and non- safety, human factors; basically the entire control room and control processes were done under the Invensys umbrella at that time. We did the four units at Fuqing, one through four. We did two units at Fangjiashan and two units at Hainan. These units have been online and working quite well now for several years. In the acquisition transfer, Framatome has taken over work on those contracts and we’ve got a pretty good operational base on eight new units. Framatome has a strong legacy in China, and the French government was involved heavily in the building of the Chinese nuclear industry. Framatome has a legacy at Daya Bay and at Ling Ao, we have done the units three and four at Tianwan, and we recently completed units five and six at Fuqing as well as the EPRs that have just recently gone online at Taishan. 5. Does Framatome have a dedicated effort in combining its design and manufacturing efforts? Framatome supplies, via its subsidiary, full-scope simulator and engineering simulator products. The delivery at the end of 2014 allowed operator training for the Taishan, China, EPR start-up. Framatome has delivered complete flux mapping systems to more than 100 nuclear power plants worldwide. A broad portfolio of movable and fixed in-core neutron flux monitoring systems are key elements of the product portfolio. Nuclear Automation's... ( Continued from page 23)
