and cost savings is realized and once the
data flow is established, it is almost not
affected by which device you choose to
use or upgrade to.
10.
What is the cost savings to a utility
over a three-year period?
Several utilities either have conducted
or are conducting eWP business cases.
Even when assuming conservative
estimates for savings, the net savings is
quite compelling. Less than a 3 year ROI
can be expected. eWPs are expected to
significantly improve productivity and
the quality of the work performed.

eWP Application...
(

in Nuclear Safety-Related Applications)
contains guidance for the acceptance of
commercial grade design and analysis
computer programs used in safety-related
applications.
Simply put, the guidance is intended
for computer programs that are used in
a way that could negatively impact the
ability of a safety-related plant structure,
system, or component to perform
its safety-related function. A safety
classification needs to be performed
based on how the computer program is
used.
Many questions similar to yours
were asked during development of the
guidance, which is why it includes
guidance on the technical evaluation
process and in particular how to perform
safety classification of computer
programs as well as guidance on how
to use commercial grade dedication as
a method to accept commercial grade
computer programs for safety related use.
Computer programs used to perform
functions such as accounting and
housekeeping would not be classified as
safety-related in a commercial reactor
environment.
3.
When is the US NRC’s endorsement
expected?
I believe the NRC is currently
targeting endorsement by the end of 2013.
4.
How does the procedure for the dedi-
cation of safety-related applications dif-
fer from non-safety-related applications?
Only
safety-related
computer
programs are candidates for dedication.
Dedication is an acceptance process used
to accept a commercial grade item (item
includes computer program) for use in a
safety-related application.
5.
What is ASME’s role in the current
dedication effort by EPRI?
Members of ASME NQA-1’s
subcommittee on software quality
assurance and the subcommittee on
engineering and procurement processes
participated in development of the
guidance document.
6.
Who are EPRI’s utility partners and
vendor partners in this effort?
Many EPRI members contributed
to the collaboration that produced this
guidance document. In addition to
representation frommany EPRI members,
Nuclear
Information
Technology
Strategic Leadership (NITSL), Nuclear
Procurement Issues Committee (NUPIC),
NRC, NEI, DOE, ASME NQA-1, EPC
firms and suppliers were also represented.
