management program based on the
component material and the environment
in which it operates.
6.
What were the lessons learned and
process improvements identified for
obtaining the additional 20 year license?
The nuclear industry is always
looking for improvements, so all of
the aging management programs that
Callaway credits include lessons learned
from each license renewed before us. We
also have committed to the NRC that we
will continue to review and incorporate
data and process improvements. More
directly, it became clear upon starting the
license renewal process that managing
the aging of equipment is part of our core
business. It is something that Callaway
has always done, but Callaway will
incorporate 10 new programs as a result
of license renewal. Callaway staff is not
waiting until year 40 of plant operation
to implement the new programs, and has
already started working on them.
7.
Are there any newmonitoring programs
or increased inspections undertaken by
Callaway after the license renewal?
Yes, there are 10 new monitoring
programs as a result of license renewal.
Some of these involve one-time only
inspections to verify that other aging
management programs are effective.
Others are programs that will formally
monitor long-term aging effects on
specific sets of components such as
tanks or cables. Several programs
are new in name only, but describe
monitoring actions that were already
being performed. For example, as part
of their job responsibilities, engineers
regularly perform field walk downs to
assess equipment condition. This regular
practice will be captured along with other
activities as part of a program to monitor
external surfaces of systems, structures
and components.
8.
When is the renewed license expected
to be issued by U.S. NRC?
TheCallawayEnergyCenter’s renewed
license was issued on March 6, 2015.
9.
Does the NRC have any current
concerns about Callaway which may
delay the Plant Life Extension approval?
The NRC Staff issued a letter to
the NRC Commissioners in January
2015 requesting their approval to issue
Callaway’s renewed license. The basis
for their request was that there were no
remaining technical or environmental
concerns. The NRC Commissioners
provided their authorization, and the
renewed license was issued on March 6,
2015.
10.
What modifications have been made
to the plant units due to the Fukushima
requirements?
Callaway
has
made
several
modifications to allow tie-ins to different
systems in order to facilitate transferring
cooling water from one system to
another in the event of an accident that
is beyond the site’s design basis. Other
modifications that are in process or
recently completed include installation
of hardened building to store emergency
equipment and installation of a hardened
water tank.
