( Continued from page 11) Corporation Nuclear Parts Center Framatome celebrated the grand opening of its Nuclear Parts Center (NPC) at the expanded Solutions Complex in Campbell County, Virginia. The NPC provides the nuclear energy industry with 24/7, year-round access to an extensive spare parts inventory, guaranteed stocking programs, supply chain management and technical support. Over the past year, Framatome expanded its SolutionsComplex onMount Athos Road to house the NPC, which was previously located on Old Forest Road in Lynchburg, Virginia, behind the corporate headquarters building. Framatome relocated approximately 35 employees and nearly 27,000 products as part of the move. Framatome will sell the building and the land associated with the prior location of the NPC on Old Forest Road. The North American headquarters offices at Old Forest Road will continue to house corporate functions as well as engineers supporting the full range of the company's activities. Decommissioning Project GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) announced that it has completed the segmentation of reactor internals at Oskarshamn Nuclear Power Plant (OKG) Unit 2 in Oskarshamn Municipality in Sweden. Employing cutting edge technology, GEH dismantled, segmented and packed reactor internals of OKG Unit 2, a boiling water reactor that began operating in 1974 and closed in 2015. All handling and segmentation of reactor internals was carried out underwater. Segmentation was mainly conducted using the Primary Segmentation System that was designed by REI Nuclear. GEH acquired the business and certain assets of REI Nuclear in December 2018. GEH will continue with the dismantling and segmentation of reactor internals at OKG Unit 1, a boiling water reactor that began operating in 1972 and closed in 2017. Test Reactor Program GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) and its PRISM technology have been selected by Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA) to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s Versatile Test Reactor (VTR) program which seeks to utilize fast neutron spectrum technology to support accelerated development of fuels and materials for U.S. advanced reactors. The project is focused on advancing the reactor design and developing cost estimates for a new fast spectrum neutron irradiation capability. The results of the project will help inform a DOE decision about whether to construct a sodium- cooled fast test reactor that could become operational as early as 2026. GEH and Bechtel National Inc. will advance the design and cost estimates for the VTR based on GEH’s PRISM technology. Agreement NuScale Power announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Bruce Power L.P., Canada’s first private nuclear generator, to develop a business case to introduce NuScale’s small modular reactor (SMR) technology to the Canadian market. This latest agreement demonstrates the growing enthusiasm in Canada for NuScale’s pioneering nuclear technology. Through the agreement, Bruce Power will support evaluation, planning and licensing activities, all of which will serve an important role in demonstrating the business case for why NuScale’s technology is the right choice for Ontario and Canada. This will include studies on the impacts of deployment of a NuScale plant in the province, feasibility studies for proposed SMR sites, and other risk evaluation exercises to show how SMR deployment can benefit Canadians. Contact: Diane Hughes, NuScale Power, telephone: (503) 270-9329, email: dhughes@nuscalepower.com . Manufacturing Phase NuScale Power selected BWX Technologies, Inc. (BWXT) to start the engineering work to manufacture NuScale’s small modular reactor (SMR). The decision follows a rigorous 18-month selection process, with expressed interest from 83 companies based in 10 countries, to determine the best company to refine NuScale’s design for manufacturability, assembly, and transportability – the first phase in bringing NuScale’s pioneering design to life. NuScale’s technology is the world’s first and only SMR to undergo Design Certification review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and is the country’s frontrunner to compete in the global SMR race, a market estimated by the Nuclear EnergyAgency to be more than $100 billion by 2035. BWXT will immediately start work on this first manufacturing phase of NuScale’s SMR, which we expect will continue through June 2020. NuScale will contract for the remaining two phases, preparation for fabrication then fabrication, at a later date. BWXT is a leading supplier of nuclear components and fuel to both the U.S. government and commercial nuclear power industry. It expects to use Pennsylvania-based Precision Custom Components as a component manufacturing contractor on this project. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is scheduled to approve NuScale’s Design Certification application in September 2020. NuScale’s first customer, UtahAssociatedMunicipal Power Systems, is on track to deploy the country’s first SMR plant in the mid- 2020s.
