Radiation Detectors
Centronic
is a manufacturer
of radiation detectors. They offer a
unique combination of capabilities and
the widest range of detectors. Their
facilities in Croydon, London, UK and
Houston, Texas manufacture gas-filled
radiation detectors, silicon photodiodes,
Geiger-Muller tubes, radiation tolerant
cameras, coil wound components and
UV instrumentation. The company is
quality approved to ISO 9001:2000 and
ISO 14001.

Storage Container
Holtec
announced the latest nuclear
storage and transport container, a version
designed for Ukraine, with a Double Wall
Canister (DWC). Start of manufacturing
was recently approved by the Chernobyl
Nuclear Power Plant after the Ukrainian
nuclear regulator issued a “no-objection”
certificate of Holtec’s design for DWC
deployment at the Interim Spent Fuel
Storage Facility-2 at Chernobyl.
While the outer canister bears the
brunt of the aggressive elements in the
surrounding environment, the inner
canister, protected from the ambient
on both its inside and outside surfaces,
can be counted on to last for centuries
as a leak tight confinement vessel. The
initial manufacturing authorization is for
five DWCs with 231 DWCs ultimately
being supplied by Holtec to store all of
Chernobyl’s in-tact spent nuclear fuel.
The manufacturing of the DWC for
Ukraine’s Chernobyl plant is expected to
be soon followed by a parallel program
that will produce DWCs for EDF Energy’s
Sizewell B Plant, located on the east coast
of the United Kingdom.

EPAs
Electrical penetration assemblies
(EPA) are the vital conduits for power,
control, and instrumentation circuits in
nuclear power plant reactor pressure
vessels. Their performance is critical to
running core functions within the reactor,
and their seals must be strong enough to
maintain the pressure boundary integrity
of the containment vessel in all accident
conditions.
A
SCHOTT
glass-to-metal sealed
electrical penetration assembly recently
underwent stringent testing at Wyle Lab-
oratories in Huntsville, Alabama. The
SCHOTT electrical penetration success-
fully passed an extensive qualification
test program at SCHOTT’s request per
IEEE Standards 317 and 344, including
full survivability in conditions analogous
to an earthquake reaching a magnitude of
12 on the Richter Scale.
SCHOTT electrical penetrations are
already used in more than 100 active
nuclear power plants throughout the
world and based on the unparalleled
robustness of the glass-to-metal seals,
have been selected for use in China’s first
commercial High-Temperature Reactor
(HTR) in the province of Shandong,
China.

Monitoring Vehicle
AREVA
, together with its Japanese
partner Chiyoda Technol Corporation,
has developed a Field Monitoring
Vehicle (FMV) allowing fast and detailed
contamination mapping of exposed areas.
This vehicle has successfully achieved the
testing phases and is now available for an
utilization by Fukushima authorities and
the response team working in the region.
The FMV consists of a tractor and
its trailer with an ambient dose rate
probe and a device to measure ground
contamination onboard. Contamination
data are recorded together with GPS data,
enabling precise mapping of the activity
of the areas monitored. Field tests have
been performed in Japan for several weeks
leading to a recent final demonstration to
end-users close to the so called “20km
area”.
In addition, together with Japanese
partners Atox and Pasco, AREVA is de-
veloping an unmanned helicopter dedicat-
ed to the monitoring of contamination in
forest areas. Combining the engineering
skills of AREVA, the mapping expertise
of Pasco and Atox’s practical capability
for ground monitoring, the helicopter will
allow to map the levels of contamination
in regions that are inaccessible to man or
ground vehicles.
